Alcuin of York, the middle figure, was invited by Charlemagne to teach and work at his Carolingian court, where he became the most affluent scholar of his day. The picture is from a Carolingian manuscript c. 831, showing Rabanus Maurus, a Frankish Benedictine monk pictured left, offering his work to Archbishop Otgar of Mainz, pictured right.
